President Donald Trump says Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should never have appointed a special counsel.
His remarks came during an interview on Wednesday with the New York Post. They came after the president had retweeted an image depicting Rosenstein, Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, special counsel Robert Mueller, former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, along with others, behind bars.
The person, who originally created the image, had written over the top of it: “NOW THAT RUSSIA COLLUSION IS A PROVEN LIE, WHEN DO THE TRIALS FOR TREASON BEGIN?”
The Post asked Trump why he thought Rosenstein belongs behind bars. The President replied: “He should have never picked a special counsel.”
The newspaper said Trump declined to answer whether he will fire Rosenstein.
Trump has repeatedly slammed the Mueller investigation. On Wednesday, he complained Mueller is telling witnesses to lie so they can get a break from prosecution.
In a Twitter post he said: "This is our Joseph McCarthy Era!"
