President Donald Trump on Saturday slammed a New York Times report claiming that he questions the loyalty of Vice President Mike Pence, saying the story is just "more FAKE NEWS."
According to the Friday report, the president has been asking aides and advisers whether they believe Pence is loyal. This after Trump made a public gesture during a post-midterms press conference last week by asking Pence about the 2020 ticket.
"The New York Times did a phony story, as usual, about my relationship with @VP Mike Pence. They made up sources and refused to ask me, the only one that would know, for a quote," he tweeted from Air Force One while on the way to visit the fire scene in California.
"I can’t imagine any President having a better or closer relationship with their Vice President then the two of us. Just more FAKE NEWS, the Enemy of the People!"
Earlier Saturday, Trump also mentioned the report as he spoke with reporters before leaving for California.
“No I don't question his loyalty at all," the president said. "He is 100 percent loyal. It was a phony story . . . a typical New York Times phony story. He is a trooper … I could not be happier."
Pence, in Papua New Guinea for a regional summit, was also asked about the report.
“I’m just tempted not to dignify it with a comment," Pence said, according to The Hill. He and the president "have a very close" and "very strong relationship," he added.
"I’ve been honored to serve as his vice president, I was honored when he asked me to run with him," Pence said.
