President Donald Trump said Friday that "Obamacare is dead" and expressed confidence in House Speaker Paul Ryan despite last year's debacle over the American Health Care Act.
"Obamacare is exploding," Trump told Fox News host Martha MacCallum. "Obamacare is dead.
"Essentially, it's dead. It is not going to make it."
Trump said that he was "disappointed" that Republicans, after seven years of promising to repeal Obamacare, "they didn't have more in line by time they walked in.
"But Obamacare took 17 months of brutality to get approved."
Still, Trump expressed support for Ryan, who pulled the American Health Care Act from two floor votes last month in the face of strong opposition by the conservative House Freedom Caucus.
"He's a good man is under tremendous amount of pressure," the president told MacCallum. "I do have confidence in him."
He also was optimistic that Ryan will be able to bring the various factions together on a revised healthcare bill.
A vote is planned for next week, House leaders said Thursday.
"What we're talking about is far better than Obamacare," Trump said. "It's an incredible bill.
"We have a good shot of getting it approved by the House."
