President Donald Trump’s allies are urging him to focus on other issues and get past the report by special counsel Robert Mueller, Politico is reporting.
“He needs to let it go,” said one former White House official. “It’s especially not helpful to him, but he just can’t help himself."
And the source tells Politico there are “very few” West Wing staffers left who are likely to tell Trump to focus on other issues.
Politico said Trump has tweeted 21 times on the subject of the findings since the report was released. He also has blasted Democrats for going after an unredacted version of the report.
Trump allies are growing concerned about his inability to move off the issue and they claim it is doing more harm than good, Politico said.
“Obviously it’s not a smart strategy,” said the former White House official.
And a former campaign official said Trump’s post-Mueller volley is “a complete and utter disaster.”
On Thursday morning, Trump had tweeted he never ordered the firing of Mueller.
McGahn had refused to carry out Trump’s order to fire the special counsel “for fear of being seen as triggering another 'Saturday night massacre,'” according to Mueller’s report.
Even some Democrats are looking for other issues to focus on.
“In the big spectrum of everything, people still are deeply concerned about prescription drug prices. They’re wanting to see Washington focused on immigration reform,” Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., told Politico.
