President Donald Trump on Monday kept the pressure on Mexico, sending out a tweet that said the country, “as a sign of good faith ... should immediately stop the flow of people and drugs through their country and to our Southern Border. They can do it if they want!”
The president’s message came the same day top Mexican officials arrived in Washington for negotiations to avoid sweeping tariffs Trump has threatened to impose unless Mexico stops all illegal migration and the flow of drugs to the U.S., The Hill reported.
Trump announced last week that he would impose on June 10 a 5% tariff on all imports from Mexico, the U.S.’s largest trading partner, unless the country bends to his demands.
The decision was made by a small group of the president’s advisers. The move, however, was opposed by many in the administration who are concerned it could harm the economy and derail progress toward ratifying a new North America trade deal, The Hill reported.
Trump has made a series of threats in recent days on the subject, emphasizing that Mexico has been promising improvements for 25 years, but that the U.S. is fed up and wants action and not just talk.
The president has previously threatened Mexico over the issue of migrants coming across the southern border, but has backed off, including earlier this year when he declared that he was going to shut down the border with Mexico, the Daily Mail reported.
