President Donald Trump on Monday congratulated himself after the American manufacturing industry added 284,000 jobs in 2018

“Last year was the best year for American Manufacturing job growth since 1997, or 21 years,” Trump tweeted Monday morning.

“The previous administration said manufacturing will not come back to the U.S., ‘you would need a magic wand.’ I guess I found the MAGIC WAND - and it is only getting better!”

In 2016, then-President Barack Obama blasted Trump, then running for the Republican nomination, for promising to boost manufacturing jobs.

“Well, how exactly are you going to do that? What exactly are you going to do? There’s no answer to it," Obama said at a PBS town hall in June, 2016.

"He just says, 'Well, I’m going to negotiate a better deal.' Well, what, how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have? And usually the answer is, he doesn’t have an answer.”

Dr. Chad Moutray, the head economist with the National Association of Manufacturers, told CNBC on Monday that “Manufacturers are bringing people back into the workforce, and we need this trend to continue.

“Our industry currently faces a workforce crisis with more than half a million open jobs today, and 2.4 million jobs expected to go unfilled over the next decade,” he added. “Closing the skills gap continues to be the top challenge facing manufacturers in the United States and is absolutely essential to ensuring that the sector continues to grow.”
