President Donald Trump made a get-well call to Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler while he was briefly hospitalized in Manhattan in May, Yahoo News reported on Monday.
Nadler, as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has led several key investigations into the Trump administration and is one of the president’s main congressional adversaries.
Last month, Nadler was at an event in Manhattan when he slumped slightly forward, apparently suffering from dehydration due to the temperature in the crowded gymnasium and was brought to hospital, where he was kept overnight as a precaution.
In a conversation that has not been previously reported, a member of Nadler’s staff said Trump called Nadler from Air Force One while he was on his way to Japan, saying he wished the congressman well and asked if he could do anything for him.
The president added that he had seen Nadler on television, repeating several times that he thought he was “tough.”
It was the first time the two had reportedly spoken in about two years. Just recently, Trump had labeled Nadler, who had weight-loss surgery several years ago, “Fat Jerry.”
The two have been political enemies since the 1980s, when Trump wanted to carry out a major real estate project on the West Side of Manhattan, which Nadler represents. Nadler and much of his constituency were against the development and succeeded in stopping it.
