GOP Rep. Fry Pushes to End 'Political Prosecutions'

By    |   Tuesday, 11 April 2023 04:25 PM EDT

Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., proposed legislation Tuesday that would protect the United States president and vice president from politically motivated prosecutions.

Fry, a member of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, introduced the No More Political Prosecutions Act in response to former President Donald Trump's indictment last week by a New York grand jury.

The short, two-page measure would adjust federal law to allow cases against current and former presidents and vice presidents to be moved from state to federal courts at their request.

"Politically motivated prosecutors should not be able to wield unwarranted power and target our nation's top leaders for their own personal gain," Fry told Breitbart. "This legislation will prevent the political prosecutions of presidents and vice presidents and thwart corrupt prosecutors' agendas."

It comes after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who led the effort to charge Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records, condemned House Republicans for considering an investigation of his office.

Bragg expressed his sentiment in a letter to House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan on March 31, suggesting that a pair of letters by the Ohio Republican made "unprecedented" requests for confidential information and accused him and his office of political motivations.

"We did not engage in a point-by-point rebuttal of your letter because our office is legally constrained in how it publicly discusses pending criminal proceedings," Bragg said.

"That secrecy is critical to protecting the privacy of the target of any criminal investigation as well as the integrity of the independent grand jury's proceedings," he added.

Bragg subsequently filed a federal lawsuit against Jordan's panel Tuesday, alleging that the lawmaker has attempted to stoke an intimidation campaign against him for prosecuting Trump.
