President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued a proclamation ordering federal buildings' flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the five victims in the shootings at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, The Washington Post reported.

"Our Nation shares the sorrow of those affected by the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland. Americans across the country are united in calling upon God to be with victims and to bring aid and comfort to their families and friends," Trump said in the proclamation, The Post reported.

The proclamation ordered the flag at the White House and all other federal buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff until sunset Tuesday.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said the decision was made Monday night after Trump "heard about the request from the mayor."

Four journalists and a sales associate were killed in the attack on Thursday.

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said he ordered the city's flags lowered immediately, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The flag is flown at half-staff on federal buildings in honor of the deaths of public officials or noteworthy figures, and after some mass shootings, The Post reported.

In 2016, the flag was flown at half-staff 53 times, the report said.
