Democrats are growing concerned their eventual presidential candidate will not be able to compete with President Donald Trump's fundraising success, The Hill is reporting.
Figures for the second quarter show that Trump's re-election campaign and the Republican National Committee raised $108 million. The total is more than the top five Democratic campaigns combined.
"I know it's still really early, but if you take a look at what he's been able to do in terms of fundraising, we'd be nuts not to worry," a Democratic strategist told The Hill.
"I mean, this isn't a man who has had the greatest presidency. Quite the opposite, actually. And he's still able to raise that kind of money. That says something."
Brad Bannon, a Democratic strategist, acknowledged Trump's latest fundraising figures are concerning. However, he is convinced the eventual 2020 Democratic candidate will be able to compete against Trump.
"If you combine all the money the Democratic candidates have raised the total is impressive," he said. "Once Democrats pick a nominee, all that money will go into one pot and will be large enough for the nominee to be competitive with the president."
And Democratic National Committeeman Robert Zimmerman remains confident.
"Is [Trump] going to have more money?" he said. "Of course, he's going to have more money. But last time I checked, it’s not the most money that wins elections, it's the most electoral votes."
