President Donald Trump complained on Thursday that Democrats are subjecting him to unfair scrutiny, claiming that “Republicans never did this to President [Barack] Obama,” prompting a backlash online.
“The Dems and their committees are going ‘nuts,’” Trump tweeted early Thursday morning.
“The Republicans never did this to President Obama, there would be no time left to run government. I hear other committee heads will do the same thing. Even stealing people who work at White House! A continuation of Witch Hunt!”
The Washington Post notes that Congress, while under Republican control, did investigate the Obama administration. Specifically, they investigated whether the IRS targeted conservative groups with rejections for nonprofit status, a federal loan given to solar energy company Solyndra, and the attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya.
“Republicans in Congress launched 8 separate investigations into Benghazi between 2012 and 2016, repeatedly finding no wrongdoing,” journalist Ashton Pittman noted on Twitter. “Before that, they investigated the Obama admin for ‘Fast and Furious’ and over allegations the IRS targeted Tea Party orgs. All fruitless.”
Radio host and The Daily Beast columnist Dean Obeidallah added: “It's not called ‘HARASSMENT’ it's called Congressional Oversight as mandated by Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution - but we all know you have no idea what the U.S. Constitution says. Perhaps you are better versed in the Russian constitution.”
