President Donald Trump on Tuesday lauded the decision by Attorney General William Barr to appoint a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the 2016 Trump campaign was "lawful and appropriate.”
“They want to look at how the whole hoax got started,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for an event in Louisiana.
“I am so proud of our attorney general that he is looking into it. I think it’s great.”
The president said he didn’t ask Barr to launch the investigation.
In April, Barr told the Senate Appropriations Committee he would investigate the origins of the Mueller probe and that he believes "spying did occur" on the Trump campaign in 2016.
Barr has chosen Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham to head the review.
