Embassy Warns of Jihadist Threats Against US Schools in Mideast

A Jihadist threat against schoolteachers and students at U.S. schools in Saudi Arabia and Egypt has caused the U.S. embassy in Cairo to issue a chilling warning.

In an official notice on the embassy's website, U.S. diplomatic personnel warn, "A recent anonymous posting on a jihadist website encouraged attacks against American and other Western schools and teachers in the Middle East, and specifically mentioned Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Maadi in Egypt as locations with high concentrations of potential targets."

In its warning, the embassy states, "The embassy is working with local schools identified with the United States or that have high concentrations of American teachers or students to review and enhance their security posture. Americans residing in or visiting Egypt should remain vigilant regarding their personal security and alert to local security developments."

Threatening schools is nothing new for Islamic terrorists. In May, a group in Panjgur, Pakistan, invaded and threatened a group of English-language schools, warning that "coeducation and learning English language is Haram [forbidden in Islam]" after destroying school desks and ripping up textbooks, the Express Tribune reported.

This time, however, the threat is directed specifically at Americans.

The Daily News Egypt reports that "although the threat to American and other Western schools was not linked to a specific militant group or organization, al-Qaida has frequently called for the kidnapping of Americans in Egypt."

"Members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have also encouraged followers abroad to strike against Western targets."

The State Department's Overseas Security Advisory Council repeated the advice and warned Americans in the region, "It is always advisable to keep your security and situational awareness levels high. Be prepared to postpone or cancel activities for personal safety concerns."
