Trucks Used in New Orleans, Las Vegas Rented With Turo App

By    |   Wednesday, 01 January 2025 08:08 PM EST

The pickup truck used in the New Orleans attack and the Cybertruck that exploded in Las Vegas on Wednesday were rented via the Turo app, which allows private owners to rent out vehicles.

Turo, in a statement, said it had no information suggesting either renter involved was a "security threat" and that it was "actively partnering with law enforcement authorities" in the investigatioin.

The attack on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans killed at least 15 people and injured 30 Wednesday morning, and a Cybertruck explosion in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas later in the day killed one and injured seven others.

Both are being treated as acts of terrorism. Multiple agencies are investigating a possible connection between the two incidents, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sources.

Turo is a car rental app that lets users rent cars across the U.S., Canada, Australia and France from "trusted hosts," according to its description on Google Play.

The description adds that it's the "world's largest car sharing marketplace," where people can "skip the rental car counter" and "choose from an extraordinary selection of vehicles shared by local hosts and rent the best car for your trip, then you can pick it up at a convenient location near you or your destination."

"Entrepreneurs can take the wheel of their futures by becoming hosts and building car sharing businesses on Turo, leveraging an established platform to scale their businesses and meet their goals. With Turo, everyone has the power to get in the driver's seat," the description reads.

Turo's full statement on the incidents:

We are heartbroken by the violence perpetrated in New Orleans and Las Vegas, and our prayers are with the victims and families. We are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents. We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management, thanks to our world-class trust and safety technologies and teams that include experienced former law enforcement professionals.

The attack in New Orleans occurred at about 4:15 a.m. Eastern time during the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Three victims have been identified by their families — Reggie Hunter, Nikyra Dedeaux and Tiger Bech. The New Orleans Police Department said the suspect shot at officers after the vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, was stopped. An ISIS flag, weapons and a potential IED were found in the vehicle, the FBI said.

Police have not determined what caused the Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas, but until they do, they are treating it as a possible criminal act and possible act of terror.

The FBI will be the lead agency in investigating the New Orleans case, and both the FBI and the Las Vegas Police Department are investigating the fire and explosion. The public is being asked to avoid Bourbon Street north from Canal to Dumaine Street, east to Royal Street, and west to Dauphine Street until further notice, according to Newsweek.
