Even rumor of a terror threat can lead to public panic in our modern society, former New York Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly said on the radio show "The Cats Roundtable" on Sunday.
"There is a high level of anxiety in the public these days, particularly when they go to airports or other crowded venues," Kelly told host John Catsimatidis.
"People are on edge, no question about it . . . There is an ongoing terrorism threat that we all have to be aware of. People apparently panic based on rumor."
Last week there were false reports of gunshots at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, which led to panic among travelers at the terminal, but police reported no shots were fired, as NBC News reported.
