Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade made a surprise visit to Sunday’s graduation ceremony for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School class of 2019, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
Wade, who retired in April at the end of the NBA regular season, has been offering his consistent support to the high school ever since the February 2018 massacre in which 17 people were killed and an additional 17 injured.
Soon after the shooting, he went to the Parkland high school to honor one of the student victims, 17-year-old Joaquin Oliver.
Wade was Oliver’s favorite player, and the student was buried in his Heat jersey.
In his speech on Sunday, Wade talked about that first visit to the school, saying he did not know what he was going to say to the students, according to the Score.
He explained that "I grew up in inner city Chicago and I've experienced a lot of awful things. But I've never experienced anything to the magnitude that you guys have just experienced."
