Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin plans to attend a gathering of a newly created anti-terrorism council in Saudi Arabia next week despite mounting evidence that the kingdom ordered the murder of a dissident journalist in Turkey.

The Washington Post cited three sources who said Mnuchin will join his counterparts at the Terrorist Financing Targeting Center in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.

Mnuchin already withdrew from attending another event in Saudi Arabia next week, an international financial summit known as "Davos in the Desert."

The Saudi leadership, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is suspected of ordering the gruesome murder of Jamal Khashoggi. It's believed Khashoggi, who most recently wrote for The Washington Post and was critical of the Saudi regime, was tortured, killed, and dismembered while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey two and a half weeks ago.

Khashoggi is a Saudi citizen, but had been living as a U.S. resident. Saudi Arabia has thus far denied playing a role in Khashoggi's disappearance, but Turkey says it has evidence in the form of an audio recording that proves a team of assassins killed him.

The U.S.-Saudi created Terrorist Financing Targeting Center was announced in May 2017 and includes those two nations, plus Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
