At least one pollster in California believes that the caravan of Central Americans heading through Mexico toward the Southern border of the U.S. is a factor in the sudden resurgence of several Republican office-seekers thought doomed.
One could be Republican Rep. Steve Knight in California’s 25th District. According to the New York Times/Siena College poll, Knight leads Democrat Katie Hill, community organizer and head of People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), 48 to 44 percent. The margin of error is 4.8 percent.
A month earlier, a Berkley IGS poll showed Hill leading Knight by 50 to 46 percent. Hill has consistently outraised Knight, an outspoken foe of illegal immigration.
Adam Probolsky, a non-partisan pollster from Orange County, told Newsmax that “some California Republicans we thought were lost a couple of weeks ago may just hang on now—with great help from the caravan.”
He added that “the sea of humanity making its way north gives pause to even the most liberal or sympathetic Americans. The caravan raises the question not just about boarder security – few actually believe there are those meaning harm to the U.S. in the group – but rather, it sparks the question about how mass migration is to be handled.”
Two-termer Knight, son of the late State Sen. (and jet pilot) Pete Knight, is the last Republican to represent Los Angeles County in Congress.
