Progress could be made on the Space Force as soon as next year, President Donald Trump said Tuesday.
"I think I can say that everybody in this room feels strongly about Space Force," Trump said during a White House meeting with military officials. "Everything's necessary but that's gonna be a very important part. It seems to be where it's at and where it's going, satellites. And I'm not just talking about sending rockets to the Moon or sending rockets to Mars, I'm talking about defense and offense.
"So much is gonna be a part of space, and we all feel very strongly about it. We're pushing it as hard as we can, and I think we have a good chance next year of officially doing our Space Force. It's a very, very big thing. It's a legacy for everybody in this room. Very important part of our military, both offense and defense."
Trump began floating the idea to form a Space Force earlier this year while speaking with Marines in San Diego. Since then, he has raised it several times and has directed the military to put together a proposal.
The Air Force estimated earlier this year the Space Force could cost $13 billion over the next five years.
Earlier Tuesday, The Washington Post asked Vice President Mike Pence about space warfare and whether nuclear weapons should be banned in that domain. They currently are under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
"I think it's in the interest of every nation to continue to ban the use of nuclear weapons in space, but what we want to do is continue to advance the principle that peace comes through strength," said Pence, who declined to say whether weapons of mass destruction should permanently be banned in space.
