Sens. Marco Rubio and Dianne Feinstein have introduced a bipartisan bill to create the Space National Guard Establishment Act, the Florida Republican and California Democrat announced on Wednesday.

The legislation would create a Space National Guard that would place Air National Guard members who carry out U.S. Space Force missions, within the structure of the Space Force command.

Last year in the House, two Colorado congressmen, Democrat Jason Crow and Republican Doug Lamborn, introduced companion legislation.

"Creating a Space National Guard would boost our military readiness and increase efficiency," said Rubio in the announcement. "It would also ensure that the Space Force retains needed talent. I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass this common-sense bill."

Feinstein added on her Senate website page that "without a National Guard component for Space Force, we risk losing many talented individuals who want to keep serving their country and their states after they leave active duty, and that is simply unacceptable."

She stressed that "creating a Space Force National Guard would also save money and ensure a smoother process in the event we need to activate personnel. Not establishing a Space National Guard was a mistake when Space Force was created, and this bill will remedy that."

Although active duty space units in 2019 were moved out of the Air Force and put in the new Space Force when it was set up, no further move was taken at that time to create a Space Force National Guard component, according to Feinstein's press release.

The U.S. Department of the Air Force, Space Force and the National Guard Bureau have already developed a plan to set up a Space National Guard within constraints of both the current budget and personnel, but that proposal has not been implemented.
