New York State Sen. Julia Salazar was living off a trust fund as she ran her democratic socialist campaign, the New York Post is reporting.

The newspaper attributed the information to new campaign finance disclosures.

It said the freshman state lawmaker from Brooklyn, had filed papers saying the trust was worth $10 million. But she later claimed that figure was a mistake and the trust is valued at around $400,000, according to the newspaper.

In papers filed with the state’s Joint Commission on Public Ethics in May, Salazar said she received $18,000 in 2018 from her late father’s trust.

She appeared to value the fund at $10 million by classifying it as “Category DDDDD.” The newspaper said that particular code signifies amounts of “10,000,000 and over.” But Salazar said she misread it and thought it read: “$10,000 and over.”

“I looked at it in a cursory way,” she told the newspaper.  “I mistook the comma versus the decimal point, so it added it extra zeros.”

She said she needed the money to pay her bills as when she ran for office.

“The $18,000 was used to support myself, because I had to stop working in order to campaign, and I had to go on unpaid leave,” she said. “Basically, seven months of living expenses on top of savings that I had from working.”

She resubmitted the corrected financial forms on July 11.
