Katie Rich has been suspended indefinitely from her job as a writer on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" after making a tweet about Donald Trump's 10-year-old son, Barron, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Rich tweeted on Friday, the same day of the 45th president's inauguration, that "Barron will be this country's first homeschool shooter."

Amid criticism, Rich deleted the tweet and later made her account private. But on Monday, her account was public again, but contained only one tweet in which she apologized for her actions.

Donald Trump has been the long-running butt of jokes on the late-night sketch comedy show, and he has complained on Twitter about actor Alec Baldwin's portrayal of him.

But presidential children — especially minors — have traditionally been considered off limits from the criticism directed at their parents.

Rich's initial tweet was captured by screengrab, and calls for her firing began on Twitter and on NBC's Facebook page. A petition on Change.org had garnered almost 39,000 signatures on Monday afternoon.

Whether Rich will permanently lose her job as a writer for SNL's satirical news segment "Weekend Update" is not known, but the Sun-Times noted that the Chicago resident's name was not on the credits this past weekend as it had been regularly before.

CNN's Jake Tapper on Monday made Rich's suspension the "Pop Culture Lead" on his program, "The Lead." The story, he said, "might suggest to some that the United States now holds our comedy writers to a higher standard than we do our leaders."

Actress Rosie O'Donnell, with whom Trump has held a long Twitter feud, apologized in December after speculating that Barron might have autism.
