The American people have the right to know what was happening inside former President Barack Obama's administration and more about the leaks that eventually led to the probe of President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, so certain emails and texts are being released in hopes of encouraging an investigation, Sen. Ron Johnson said Wednesday.
"I'm working with Sen. [Chuck] Grassley and also Sen. [Lindsey] Graham and we want to ask the questions that quite honestly Robert Mueller did not ask and not investigate," the Wisconsin Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"What we're doing is we're releasing certain texts and emails that will hopefully prod in this case the inspector general and intelligence community to look into potential leaks out of the intelligence community."
One of the texts, from former FBI Agent Peter Strzok to his romantic partner, former FBI attorney Lisa Page, says that "'our sisters'" have begun "'leaking like mad'" and were "'kicking into overdrive,'" said Johnson. "Pretty interesting text. What were they worried about?"
There are many questions that have not been answered, said Johnson.
Such texts provide a "narrative" that eventually produced the Mueller investigation, said Johnson.
"We finally found out what [Rep.] Devin Nunes found out in the House Intelligence Committee over a year ago, that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia," said Johnson.
Meanwhile, Inspector General Michael Horowitz is looking at all leaks he found out during his investigation into Hillary Clinton's email scandal, and about the leaks coming from the FBI.
"We need to take a look at this entire story that was spun up that resulted in 19 months of investigation and done a great deal of harm to this administration's ability to govern," said Johnson.
