Donald Trump Jr. has declined further Secret Service protection because he wants more privacy, a senior administration official told The New York Times on Monday.

The Secret Service's funding has been stretched thin because of President Donald Trump's frequent travel and large family. Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles, in an interview with USA Today in late August, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last all of 2017.

Trump Jr., and wife Vanessa have five children but it was not clear Monday whether protection would cease for them, too.

"To ensure the safety and security of our protectees and their families, we will not confirm who is currently receiving Secret Service protection," said Catherine Milhoan, a spokeswoman for the Secret Service.

Trump Tower, home to the Trump Organization where Trump Jr. works, will continue to be protected by the agency since it is the president’s primary residence.

Trump Jr. is a key figure in the Justice Department’s investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.
