Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y., vowed Democrats will not provide any additional funding for a wall at the U.S. southern border, The Hill is reporting.
His comments came on the Senate floor on Thursday.
“I want to be crystal clear. There will be no additional appropriations to pay for the border wall. It’s done,” Schumer said.
If a new overall funding bill isn’t signed into law, part of the government will shut down after Dec. 21.
Schumer is willing to wait until January, when the Democrats take control of the House and have more leverage, The Hill said.
Democratic leaders have agreed to include $1.3 billion for border security in the funding bill, but President Donald Trump wants $5 billion to construct the wall on the Mexican border.
"I am proud to shut down the government for border security," Trump said during a meeting with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Schumer.
Speaking Thursday, Schumer said: “I would just like to remind my friend the majority leader (Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.), that if we arrive at a Trump shutdown, the onus for reopening the government will soon fall in his lap.”
