Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday that mainstream Republicans may have learned a lesson after following Sen. Ted Cruz and the tea party down a path that nearly led the country into default.
Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," Schumer said the Republicans "may decide not to go forward in this direction. … I think that we'll see a new type of negotiation where we come together."
When asked by host David Gregory whether the same standoff on the debt limit will reoccur during impending budget negotiations, Schumer suggested institutionalizing a rule that allows the president to increase the debt ceiling while requiring a congressional vote of disapproval.
"If we were to do that, the chances of going up to the brink again, the chances of this kind of debacle, would decrease," Schumer said.
On the topic of Obamacare – which experienced more computer woes last week that frustrated those trying to sign up – Schumer brushed aside the criticism.
"I think the computer glitches are being used by a good number of people who never wanted Obamacare in the first place as an excuse to just sort of bash it," he said. "If you need healthcare, the fact that you couldn't get on the computer right away isn't going to stop you from two, three weeks from now, when they're fixed, from going on."
