Days before the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting massacre, that school and dozens of others in Chicago were placed on lockout status as the FBI searched for a woman who they say made a credible threat of violence.
The Denver Post reported that local, state, and federal law enforcement officers and agents are looking for Sol Pais, an 18-year-old who the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said traveled to Colorado Monday night. She subsequently "made threats in the Denver metropolitan area. She is armed and considered to be extremely dangerous," the office wrote on Facebook.
The Facebook bulletin included a description of Pais and her last known whereabouts.
"Please do not approach her as she is considered armed and dangerous," the sheriff's office said.
After the threat was made public, all Jefferson County schools were placed on lockout status. That list included Columbine, the site of a horrific massacre on April 20, 1999. According to the Post, the Colorado Department of Education followed up by urging all schools in the Denver area to go into lockout status.
In a tweet, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said, "We are currently investigating what appears to be a credible threat possibly involving the schools. Children are safe. Deputies are at the schools. Multiple schools are on lockout in Columbine area & Mountains. More details to come #JeffCo."
Jefferson County comprises the area to the west of Denver and includes cities Golden, Lakewood, and others. Columbine High School is also located there.
A new poll, meanwhile, found that many parents have little confidence in the ability of schools to stop a gunman.
