Next week's summit in Vietnam between President Donald Trump and North Korea Chairman Kim Jong Un marks an achievement for the fact that they're once again sitting at the table as relations continue to progress, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Friday.
"You can expect continued conversations between the two leaders," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "We've seen progress since the beginning of this administration. When the president first took over, we were at great odds with North Korea."
When Trump took office, North Korea was still testing missiles and flying them over other countries, said Sanders, but that has stopped. Further, remains of military personnel are returning home and hostages are being released.
"We've got a long way to go," said Sanders. "We'll see what happens but we're continuing to make progress."
Sanctions have remained in place throughout the process and will remain until Trump decides they are no longer needed, and he's in no hurry as long as conversations continue to go well, said Sanders.
"I think that the only ones setting high expectations are probably the media because they're looking for reasons to attack this president," she said. "They hate the idea that he has done so well on something his predecessors couldn't do anything on."
At the same time, "we're certainly not naive in the process and the president is going to take things one step at a time," said Sanders.
