President Donald Trump will use whatever powers he has to protect the United States' borders, including outlawing birthright citizenship, but Democrats are to blame for the country being in the place it is now where illegal immigration is concerned, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday.
"The president will look at any way possible that he can find legally and constitutionally to make sure that we're doing everything we can," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"Let's not forget why we're even here at all. That is because of the failure of Congress, Democrats in Congress to actually do their job."
Trump said in an Axios interview Tuesday that he wants to enact an executive order forbidding children born to illegal immigrants coming into the country from automatically becoming citizens, a call that has met with disagreement from both sides of the political aisle and from constitutional experts.
"Media, Democrats, which sometimes can be one and the same, would overplay their hand whether on this issue or anything else the president brings up," said Sanders.
"The reason we're in this position in the first place because Democrats failed to come to the table, they failed to work with this president and pass legislation that helps protect our country."
Further, she said that there are a "number of legal scholars" who think the president can issue his executive order.
"The president wants to see total reform take place," Sanders said. "We have massive loopholes in our immigration system we have to close, or we're just going to continue kicking the can down the road. The president is not someone that keeps passing the buck here. He wants to solve the problem."
