A Russian military jet flew within five feet of a U.S. Navy aircraft, defense sources told CNN.

The heart-stopping moment came as a Russian jet performed an unsafe "intercept" of a Navy P-3 Orion surveillance plane in international airspace over the Black Sea on Monday.

The Russian jet's action forced the Navy plane to end its surveillance mission prematurely, one of the sources told the network.

It's the latest close call between military planes operated by Russia and the U.S in the Black Sea area.

Just two months ago, a Russian Su-30 fighter jet made an "unsafe" intercept of a US P-8A Poseidon aircraft as it flew over the Black Sea.
