DeSantis: Don't Remove Confederate Monuments

By    |   Thursday, 01 February 2024 01:51 PM EST

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday said he is "100% against removing" monuments that commemorate Confederate leaders, FloridaPolitics reported.

"I think it's just gone too far," DeSantis said in Jacksonville in response to a question from a reporter about proposed legislation to punish municipalities for taking down Confederate statues.

"I have not seen the legislation, but I've been very clear ever since I've been governor, I do not support taking down monuments in this state. ... I think it's totally appropriate for the Legislature to say we're going to stop the madness."

DeSantis went on to criticize a local push to remove a statue of former President Andrew Jackson from Jacksonville's downtown area.

"What are we going to do, rename the city? We've got to stop doing this and I think it's not something that's going to end up working out well for us, and it's like, who's next?" DeSantis said.

"You're already up to, like, [Abraham] Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. You're going to go on and on there because if you're going to, if you're going to apply some type of hyperwoke 21st century test to pass people, you're going to run into turbulence with MLK Jr., you're going to run into turbulence with a lot of people."
