Mitt Romney thanked former rival Rick Santorum for his endorsement, praising him for his "commitment to conservatism" in a statement released Tuesday.
"The race for the Republican presidential nomination has always been about restoring the promise of America," Romney said. "Senator Santorum and I share an absolute commitment to that goal, just as we share an absolute commitment to reversing the failing policies of the Obama administration, from its assault on freedom of conscience to its feckless foreign policy."
Late Monday, Santorum sent an email with a lukewarm endorsement of his former rival, whom he attacked bitterly during the early primaries.
This is the second time Santorum has endorsed Romney for president.
Santorum made a point to reach out to deeply conservative supporters in his email, saying he wanted to keep the lines of communication open with Romney.
Romney, however, did not say if there would be a role for Santorum in the general election.
"Ann and I extend our sincere gratitude to Karen and Rick for his endorsement, and our continued prayers for the health of their daughter Bella," Romney said.
