Political consultant Roger Stone is facing the real possibility of having a gag order placed on him later this week, but he has plans to deal with it and continue his public relations campaign.

Politico reported Wednesday that Stone, who was arrested last week in a dramatic raid caught on camera at his Fort Lauderdale home, has an attorney working for him who specializes in the First Amendment. If Washington, D.C., District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ultimately decides to issue the order despite Stone's lawyers' arguments, he has two friends who will speak for him in public about his case.

Stone was charged with several counts of lying under oath and witness tampering as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation. He pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, and on Friday he will appear before Jackson for a status hearing.

Stone is accused of lying to Congress about communications between himself and an intermediary who investigators believe handled messages back and forth between Stone and WikiLeaks during the 2016 presidential campaign. For months, Stone has been proclaiming his innocence in speeches, television interviews, and on social media. He has appeared on TV several times since his arrest.

Stone told Politico in May 2018: "The most dangerous thing is to go silent. When you're silent, people assume you're guilty of something."

Mueller's team is looking at whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in the last presidential election. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said Monday the investigation is close to completion.
