This week could be key in revealing how special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will play out, Politico reported on Monday.
“It’s one of those moments when a number of the threads are finally starting to merge together, which is to be expected because we do appear to be near the end,” said former Obama Justice Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
The main event this week's action is sentencing for President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, which will close the book on Mueller’s most visible legal fight.
After Manafort received 47 months last week for a series of financial fraud crimes, which was well below the federal guidelines, all attention will focus on what further sentencing he will receive following his guilty plea last September to charges that he acted as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukraine, laundered money and tampered with a witness.
Longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone also will know his trial date this Thursday on charges of lying to Congress and obstructing lawmakers’ Russia investigation, which will place a timeline on when the public will know more details about his alleged contacts with WikiLeaks.
In addition, this week status reports are due for two of Mueller’s biggest cooperators — Michael Flynn and Rick Gates — that will indicate if he has tapped them for all the information investigators need.
Although some of these different events are perhaps mere circumstance, Politico reported, their confluence also represents the fact that numerous high-profile storylines of the Mueller probe are finally coming to their conclusion and could help shed light on whether he has more criminal indictments up his sleeve.
