Special counsel Robert Mueller and his investigators may have much more evidence than "anyone on the outside can imagine," going far beyond what major news organizations have reported, according to Bob Bauer, a former White House counsel for President Barack Obama.
"Investigators have the skills and resources to turn up evidence, including witness testimony, that goes beyond what anyone on the outside can imagine in the daily speculation about the Mueller probe,” Bauer, now a law professor at New York University, told Axios.
Trump and his legal team say they have completely cooperated with Mueller's investigation team, turning over millions of documents, notes Newsweek, and has been working for eight months to negotiate an interview the president and Mueller.
Axios, however, pointed out that there remains a great deal of information that has not yet been made public, including Trump's tax returns and bank records; internal Trump Organization records; cellphone records related to the Trump Tower meeting between the president's eldest son, campaign officials, and Russians; White House and campaign emails and text messages and more.
There have been calls for Mueller to follow a Justice Department guideline against taking significant action on a legal case 60 days or less before an election. Legal experts point out that the rule is not set in stone, however, pointing to former FBI Director James Comey's decision to announce reopening Hillary Clinton's investigation two weeks before the 2016 presidential election.
