President Donald Trump blames former White House counsel Don McGahn for special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, CNN reports.
A source close to the lawyer told the news outlet Trump complained to McGahn about the Mueller investigation during a face-to-face meeting earlier this month, saying the lingering probe had cast a cloud over his presidency.
McGahn officially left his post Oct. 17.
"Typically, you would have the incumbent stay until the successor was ready to take his place, but in this case, McGahn was tired of the president and the president was tired of McGahn," a source told CNN, adding that while the departure was "positive," both men recognized it was time for him to go.
"He didn't want to stay on and the president didn't want him to stay."
Mueller in May 2017 was named as special counsel to oversee the investigation into ties between Trump's campaign and Russian officials.
So far, four former campaign advisers have been indicted or pleaded guilty, though none of those charges are directly related to misconduct by the president's campaign.
Other reported area of focus of Mueller's investigation, including potential obstruction of justice by the Trump administration, have not resulted in any indictments.
Trump has railed against the probe as a witch hunt, and alleged Mueller's team is biased against him.
While Trump reportedly spent most of his meeting with McGahn griping about Mueller's probe, he also praised him on how he handled other duties, per CNN.
