There was never any evidence President Donald Trump colluded with anyone, and special counsel Robert Mueller's report and investigation would be a "farce if it weren't so serious," as it would not be up to him to exonerate anyone, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.

"There is no evidence in 428 pages, there is no evidence that the president in any way obstructed anything," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "Mueller got to see everybody he wanted to see, except the president himself and the president agreed to submit written questions and answers."

Mueller also "got to put people in solitary confinement," Gingrich said. "In one case, a woman served over half of her potential sentence in solitary confinement in a way I think is very un-American."

Further, if anyone wants to know "how sick the system has gotten," that is shown under Mueller's assertion he could not exonerate Trump, said the former speaker.

"That is exactly the opposite of the American system," Gingrich said. "In the absence of proof of guilt, somebody is automatically innocent. We don't have to walk around every day proving we're innocent. That is our birthright as Americans. It is the duty of the state to prove we're guilty. Clearly, Mueller could not do that."

Gingrich also said he could not quite tell what was going on when Mueller was phrasing some of his statements, but he thinks, in Mueller's social circles, "people felt he had failed to serve the worthy cause of destroying Donald Trump."

Gingrich further commented, if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other leaders do not start impeachment hearing now, they probably never will.
