Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders come across as "tone-deaf" on allegations brought up by women, former Sen. Rick Santorum told CNN’s “State of the Union" on Sunday.
“As much as they try to sound like they get it, they don’t, and it’s clear to those who have an ear for this that they don’t get it,” Santorum said.
The Republican from Pennsylvania added that “It’s ultimately going to be a problem for them.”
He described both men as “two old white guys… from a different era,” adding that Biden and President Donald Trump sounded and looked similar on this subject as well.
Several women made accusations that they were sexually harassed by an aide during Sanders's presidential campaign in 2016 and that it was not handled appropriately by supervisors, according to The Hill.
In Biden’s case, several women have said he made them feel uncomfortable by touching them or entering their personal space without consent.
Biden initially promised he would be more “mindful” of women’s personal space, but the controversy was exacerbated on Friday when he joked he “had permission” to hug two people at an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers conference, The Hill reported.
Democratic strategist and CNN commentator Symone Sanders said on “State of The Union” that Biden “needs to continuously make clear that he is hearing people and understanding them. But If you go out on a stage anywhere in America and joke about something that many people noted was very serious for them…That does not make people feel as though you actually understand.”
She added that “I think this is going to be something he has to continue, unfortunately, to address.”
