Donald Trump Jr.'s allies are reportedly putting the screws on the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee, turning several GOP senators against the panel's chairman after news he subpoenaed testimony from the president's son.
Calling it an "all-out war," The New York Times reported the pressure Thursday included tweets targeting panel chairman Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and calls from people close to the president to Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.
According to the Times, Tillis, a close ally of Burr's, is viewed as vulnerable as he faces a conservative primary challenger next year — and President Donald Trump might tweet support for the opponent if Tillis did not speak out.
The president's eldest son could theoretically face calls to be held in contempt of Congress if he does not comply with the subpoena, the Times reported.
Tillis tweeted Thursday it was time for the committee to move on and the president had been "cleared."
"I feel like the investigation ended when the special counsel transmitted the report to A.G. Barr," he tweeted, referring to Attorney General William Barr.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., called the Trump Jr. subpoena "overkill," adding, "It is sort of malicious to bring the president's family in here and subject them to more interviews," the Times reported.
Even Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a senior member of the Intelligence Committee, broke ranks with his chairman.
"I can understand his frustration with being asked to come back after having cooperated for such a long period of time and now the Mueller report is concluded, sort of wondering what the purpose of this is," he said, the Times reported.
