More than 70 percent of Americans - including 92 percent of Republicans - think that mainstream media outlets intentionally report fake news, according to the latest Axios/SurveyMonkey poll.
The results, according to Axios:
- 72 percent overall think media reports news it knows to be fake.
- 25 percent overall say media rarely or never reports false or misleading news.
- 79 percent of Independents think media reports news it knows is false.
- Even 53 percent of Democrats say media knowingly reports fake news.
Further, 65 percent overall say fake news is reported because of an agenda compared to just 3 percent who think it's an accident. Nearly one-third say fake news gets reported because of laziness or poor fact-checking, according to the survey.
But at least both Democrats and Republicans are confident in their ability to spot a piece of fake news; 78 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats say they can sniff out fake news.
The online poll was conducted June 15-19 among a total sample of 3,936 adults, selected from the nearly 3 million people who take surveys on the SurveyMonkey platform each day.
The modeled error estimate for the full sample is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
