Republicans Friday ripped the Labor Department's report showing the slowest hiring last month by U.S. employers in five years, with GOP Chairman Reince Priebus calling for a drastic change in the White House that could only come with Donald Trump.

"This devastating jobs report showing the weakest hiring in five years is the latest indication we need to move away from the failed Obama policies Hillary Clinton is promising to continue," Priebus said. "The percentage of Americans in the labor force is the smallest since 1978 — and last month 12 times more people gave up looking for work than found a job.

"This is unacceptable," he said.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who sits on the Senate Budget and Finance committees, said that the report proved that "the status quo is not working, and that we’re on the wrong track."

"For the millions of families across the country who are looking for relief from the middle-class squeeze of stagnant wages and higher costs of living, today’s jobs report is just another disappointment," he said. "Too many people are being kept on the sidelines, unable to fulfill their God-given potential."

The Labor Department said that only 38,000 jobs were created throughout the country in May, the fewest in more than 5 years, though the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent from 5 percent.

The jobless rate is now at its lowest since November 2007 — primarily because nearly a half-million unemployed Americans stopped looking for work and so were no longer officially counted as unemployed.

The report, which was weaker than expected, has raised doubts whether the Federal Reserve will increase interest rates later this month or in July. Many Wall Street analysts had expected an increase by July.

Economist Larry Kudlow told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV on Friday that the figures continued a steady decrease in job gains since December.

"It's not a pretty picture," he told Malzberg. "I think we are in a mild business recession."

Priebus called for a new plan for the economy that could only come with presumptive nominee Trump eventually taking over 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

"By running on four more years of Obamanomics, Hillary Clinton is guaranteeing that struggling Americans will never get ahead," Priebus said. "Donald Trump is a successful businessman who knows what it takes to create jobs and get our economy back on track.

"As this report makes clear, we need that kind of thinking now more than ever in the White House."

Trump and other Republicans took to Twitter to rip the jobs report:
