Shannon Brandt, the man who reportedly confessed to killing a North Dakota teenager who he said was part of a "Republican extremist group," has posted bail, according to news reports.

Brandt, 41, posted his $50,000 bond after spending just days in a Stutsman County jail on criminal charges related to the death of Cayler Ellingson, 18.

Brandt was arrested Sunday after he called authorities and said he "struck the pedestrian because the pedestrian was threatening him."

"Brandt stated that the pedestrian called some people and Brandt was afraid they were coming to get him," according to a probable-cause affidavit. "Brandt admitted ... he hit the pedestrian and that the pedestrian was part of a Republican extremist group."

Police say Brandt was allegedly drunk at the time.

"Brandt admitted to striking the pedestrian with his car because he had a political argument with the pedestrian and believed the pedestrian was calling people to come get him," the court document continues. "Brandt admitted to leaving the scene of the incident and returning shortly after where he called 911."

Brandt allegedly began chasing Ellingson after they had a politically charged altercation at a street festival in the city of McHenry.
