Puerto Rico Justice Secretary Wanda Vasquez, who is next in line to replace embattled Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello, tweeted on Sunday that she does not want the position.
“I have no interest in occupying the position of Governor,” Vasquez wrote. “I hope that the Governor identifies and submits a candidate for the position of Secretary of State before August 2 and I have told him so.”
Puerto Rico’s secretary of state is above the Justice secretary in the chain of succession, but the position is currently unfilled after Secretary of State Luis Rivera Marín resigned, according to The Hill.
The millions of protesters who have demonstrated in the streets in recent weeks calling for Rossello’s resignation have also demanded that Vasquez step down, saying that she mishandled the prosecution of fellow members of the New Progressive Party.
The protest leaders had said that the demonstrations would continue if Rossello was replaced by Vasquez, the New York Post reported.
The demonstrations were sparked by the publication on July 13 of chat messages in which Rossello and advisers used profane language to describe female politicians and openly gay Puerto Ricans.
