DC Police Lt. Charged With Tipping Off Proud Boys Leader

By    |   Friday, 19 May 2023 01:45 PM EDT

A Washington, D.C., police lieutenant was charged Friday with allegedly tipping off former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio about a pending warrant for his arrest ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Shane Lamond, 47, of Stafford, Virginia, worked as the supervisor of the Intelligence Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department's Homeland Security Bureau. Investigators say he had been in contact with Enrique Tarrio, then leader of the Proud Boys, since July, 2019, and that the two corresponded regularly after the 2020 election.

Tarrio was found guilty early this month of seditious conspiracy for his role in the Jan. 6 attack. He faces up to 20 years in prison. Lamond was charged with one count of obstruction of justice and three counts of making false statements. If convicted, he faces up to 45 years in prison.

Lamond "regularly provided sensitive law enforcement information" in return for Tarrio providing notice about plans to bring his group to rallies in support of former President Donald Trump, according to an indictment filed against Lamond in federal district court in Washington.

The exchanges often took place through encrypted messaging.

A federal grand jury charged Lamond with obstructing justice for tipping Tarrio off about an investigation into the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner at a historic Black church in Washington following a pro-Trump rally in December, 2020. Tarrio had previously claimed responsibility for the burning.

"I told them you are made up a lot of Latinos and blacks so not a racist thing. If anything I said it's political but then I drew attention to the Trump and American flags that were taken by Antifa and set on fire," Lamond wrote in a message contained in the indictment. "I said all those would have to be classified as hate crimes too."

Even after the Jan. 6 attack, Lamond and Tarrio continued to maintain a cooperative relationship.

"I think I could have stopped this whole thing," Tarrio texted on Jan. 7, before offering to help police arrest someone in connection with the riot.

"Let me know if she's on your list," Tarrio wrote. "I'll have her turn herself in."

"Looks like the feds are locking people up for rioting at the Capitol," Lamond texted back on Jan. 8. "I hope none of your guys were among them."

Lamond also deliberately misrepresented the conversations to investigators, according to the indictment.

At one point he told Tarrio he personally supported "you all and don't want to see your group's name or reputation dragged through the mud."
