Readers in an NPR poll named Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe as the top political story of the year, with the fallout stemming from sexual harassment allegations and the #MeToo movement placing second, The Hill reported Saturday.

"Readers select the Mueller Probe as top political story of the year by 53-47 margin over Sexual Harassment Fallout. Undoubtedly, two of the biggest stories of 2017. Thanks to everyone who participated," Domenico Montanaro, NPR's lead editor for politics and digital audience, tweeted Friday. "Congratulations to @davesteadman for his winning bracket. Happy New Year!"

Rounding out the top four political stories of 2017 were the Women's March and President Donald Trump's firing last May of FBI Director James Comey. Readers voted on Twitter in a March Madness-style survey.

Other topics readers considered of the year's headlines included Trump's appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, the violence earlier this year in Charlottesville, Va., natural disasters, Democrat Doug Jones' special election win in Alabama for the Senate, Trump naming Jerusalem the capital of Israel and the president pulling the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement.
