A protest in Portland exploded into a violent scene that led to a man who crashed his truck being yanked out and stomped by angry demonstrators.
Videos have appeared online of the man being punched, kicked, and told not to leave the middle of the street. The man said he did not want to hurt anyone. The attack took place near a federal courthouse and a peaceful protest in the area.
The group of people continued to attack the man as he sat in the middle of the street and appeared half-conscious. That is when a man was kicked in the side of the head and completely knocked out. The sound of his head can be heard hitting the pavement.
A Portland Police spokesperson said the protesters "were chasing the truck before it crashed, and they assaulted the driver after the crash."
Officers responding to the scene "encountered a hostile crowd and a squad from the Rapid Response Team responded to help secure the scene while the investigation was underway."
Andy Ngo, who has been covering the Portland protests, reported the man had crashed his car and a "mob pulled him out & beat him senseless in front of the passenger. He's bleeding & unconscious. No police."
Unrest has gripped Portland for 81 nights following the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in Minneapolis this May. Police reform protests in the city that happen during the day are normally peaceful. However, many of the demonstrations have turned violent during the evening hours.
Police declared a riot Saturday night and used crowd control equipment such as smoke to break up the crowd in front of a law enforcement agency's building.
Officials said some protesters had hurled "softball size" rocks, glass bottles, and other things at police. Two officers were sent to the hospital after being injured by flying objects.
In all, eleven people were arrested.
