Engaging in a bit of gossip with your hairdresser while they style your hair is a common practice, but it’s also is a big “no” according to Pope Francis.
Speaking at the Vatican Monday, the 82-year-old urged hairdressers, hairstylists and beauticians to practice their professions in a "Christian style" and to "avoid succumbing to the temptation of chatter" so commonly associated with their line of work, DW News noted.
For inspiration Francis recommended turning to the 16th century Peruvian Saint Martino de Porrest who worked in Lima as a barber-surgeon, an industry in which it was common to perform haircuts, amputations, and bloodletting.
"Each of you, in your professional work, can always act with righteousness, thus making a positive contribution to the common good of society," Francis said, according to The Daily Mail.
Rather than gossiping with customers while snipping their locks, hairdressers and stylists should be treating their patrons with "kindness and courtesy, and always offering them a good word and encouragement."
It is not just Francis who has raised concerns over gossiping in the salon. Clients often open up to their stylists about their personal lives. Michael Duenas, CEO and founder of hairstyling service HairRoomService.com, theorized that haircuts created a false sense of intimacy but hairdressers and stylists are under no obligation to keep any secrets.
"I know so much stuff that I wish I never did," Duenas said, according to Market Watch. "One woman told me she cheated on her husband. He was in my appointment book for the following day."
A recent survey found that, of the 52% of respondents who said they had been seeing the same hairdresser for over three years, 38% admitted they had discussed their intimate relationships with their hairdresser.
