The Trump administration supports democracy and liberty and believes the Chinese government should respect the rights of protesters in Hong Kong, but the protests should be conducted in a peaceful way, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday.
"I think it's important to understand that China needs to fulfill its promises," Pompeo told "CBS This Morning." "One of the challenges of the trade deal is you have to make sure that China lives up to the commitments it would make in Hong Kong."
Meanwhile, Pompeo said the United States has not returned to the negotiating table with North Korea and Chairman Kim Jong Un as quickly as had been hoped, and he wishes the country was not test firing short-range ballistic missiles.
"In the end, chairman Kim made a commitment to president trump in Singapore in June of last year where he said that he was prepared to denuclearize," said Pompeo. "Our team's effort at the state department is to deliver that on behalf of the American people. President Trump's focus is to keep the American people safe."
Pompeo will be meeting with the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday and said there are resolutions that will put boundaries on what North Korea can do.
"We hope Chairman Kim will come to the table and get a better outcome," Pompeo said. "It will be better for the North Korean people (and) will be better for the world.
