President Donald Trump is having a big impact on the midterm elections, according to most voters in a new survey from USA Today and Suffolk University Poll.
Most of the 1,000 voters polled said that Trump will have “a lot” of influence on how they vote in November, with more than one-in-three saying they will vote to oppose Trump and just under a quarter saying they will vote to support him.
The results:
- 22.6 percent of Trump supporters said Trump will have “a lot” of impact on their vote.
- 8 percent of Trump supporters said Trump will have “a little” impact on their vote.
- 35.1 percent of those who oppose Trump said he will have “a lot” of impact on their vote.
- 8.1 percent of those who oppose Trump said he will have “a little” impact on their vote.
- 24.8 percent said Trump will have no impact on their vote.
- 1.4 percent are undecided if Trump impacts their vote.
Although most voters said Trump is important to their vote, very few, 5.8 percent, rated a politician’s position on Trump as the deciding factor.
The poll also found that 54 percent disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 43 percent approve, and that most, 56 percent, want to elect a Congress that “stands up” to Trump, while 34 percent want a Congress that “cooperates” with Trump.
“Midterm voters are saying they are voting Democrat for Congress, they believe Democrats will seriously consider impeaching President Trump, and yet they are personally opposed to impeachment,” David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, said in a press release. “Welcome to the 2018 midterm election.”
Suffolk polled 1,000 voters by phone from October 18-22, with a margin of error of +/-3 percentage points.
