Sixty-eight percent of Americans say the federal income tax system needs a complete overhaul or major change, a new CNN poll reveals.
However, more people want Congress to first deal with hurricane relief efforts
Here are the highlights from the survey released on Wednesday:
- 12 percent say tax laws should be a high priority for Congress in the coming weeks.
- 11 percent say lawmakers should focus on immigration.
- 36 percent want Congress to concentrate on disaster relief efforts right now.
And CNN noted the poll results show tax reform and immigration do not spark much support for President Donald Trump.
Here is how the rest of the poll breaks down:
- 36 percent of those surveyed approve of Trump's handling of immigration.
- 34 percent back his work on taxes.
- 40 percent of Republican say they believe their own taxes would drop under a Trump tax reform plan.
- 11 percent of Democrats believe their taxes would be cut by a Trump tax package.
The poll, conducted from Sept. 17-20, surveyed 1,053 people. The margin of error is 3.7 percentage points..
